Motorcycle ‘traveling at high speed’ hits center island, kills 3

TWO men and a woman on a motorcycle died after they hit a center island in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City past 1:30 a.m. yesterday.

The victims, who were not wearing a helmet, suffered severe head injuries.

They were identified as Henry Caballes Jr., 18, a resident of Suba Masulog in Basak; Jake Igot, 20, of Sitio Abuno, Barangay Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City; and Babielyn Ricafranca, 18, of Aviation Saac 1, Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City.

PO2 Jennifer Decatoria, investigator of Lapu-Lapu City Police Office-Traffic Management Unit, said Caballes, the driver, was traveling at high speed while passing a curve on M.V. Patalinghug Ave.

Decatoria said the three were on their way to Barangay Pajo from Tamiya in Barangay Basak.

“They were going really fast. They didn’t hit another vehicle. They must have grazed the center island and lost control,” he said in Cebuano.

Due to the impact, the three riders were thrown off the motorcycle.

“The motorcycle was found 20 to 50 meters from the victims’ bodies,” Decatoria said.

He said members of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation brought the victims to the Lapu-Lapu District Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

“It is possible that they had a drink because it was past 1 a.m. and they just came from work,” Decatoria said in Cebuano.

Relatives of one of the victims did not want to believe what happened.

The still-intact motorcycle was taken to the Basak Barangay Hall for safekeeping.

In a separate interview, Lucy Ochea, head of Solid Waste Management of Barangay Basak, said when they and barangay tanods got to the area, the victims appeared lifeless.
