All hail to our beloved Assumption

MARCH 10 is the feast day of our beloved founder of the Assumption, Mother Marie Eugenie, R.A. Annually, the “old girls” come together to celebrate this gift we all share.

As we are deep into the Lenten season, the Assumption Alumnae Board decided on an activity in sync with the latest of the call of the Church, the extraordinary Jubilee of the Year of Mercy. So at 9 in the morning, Asuncionistas gathered at the Porta Sancta of the San Sebastian Cathedral with Fr. Chao, Chancellor, to guide the pilgrims.

Kissing the door as an act of reverence and acceptance of God’s almighty mercy, more than 50 members of the Alumnae passed through the door. The door that leads to reconciliation, forgiveness, and mercy.

Fr. Chao expounded that as sinners, as we all are, pass through that door, God indulges us with His bottomless pit of mercy. We are like the prodigal children who appeal and beg Him to forgive us and He welcomes us with open arms into His fold.

The pilgrimage consisted of Confession and culminated with the Mass. After which, the ladies proceeded to 21 Restaurant for Agape.

Classmates grouped together and shared the latest happening in their lives. It was an opportunity also for the board to acknowledge Lourdes de Leon who has kept this alumnae association so closely knit over the years even without a school here in Negros. Lourdes has worked tirelessly with monthly meetings among the board who are graduates from in Iloilo and Manila.

AAA (Association of Assumption Alumnae) have, for over 16 years, worked with the junior and senior seminarians teaching them good manners and right conduct which are lost now in the curriculum. As future preachers, the old girls and friends teach conversational English to the seminarians. Fr. Chao has been a product of these weekly teach-ins, as well as Fr. Roy, now Dean of Academics.

Another endeavor of the AAA is the Days with the Lord, which is an annual retreat, afforded to government high school students not exclusively for Catholics but open to all religions.

In communitarian spirit, the old girls have also contributed to the needs of the fire victims of Banago.

Education is one of the gifts we have to thank God for especially if it is an education that is anchored on love for God and neighbor. All hail to our beloved Assumption!
