Summer Capital prepares for Holy Week

THE committee on communications, peace, security and traffic assistance of the Sumvac 2016, chaired by Police Senior Superintendent George Daskeo, recently convened to finalize the areas of responsibilities of the different communication/civic groups and volunteer groups in preparation to the upcoming Holy Week.

Baguio City, being the Summer Capital of the Philippines, expects influx of domestic and foreign visitors to observe their Holy Week in this mountain resort.

Being at the forefront in the implementation of the activities for Sumvac 2016 and with the limited resources of the city, the different communication/civic groups and volunteers will be deployed in the strategic areas in the city to assist motorists and visitors during the Holy Week.

Medical teams will also be deployed in the strategic areas in cases of emergency.

This year, the City Government created its own version of the spiritual trail of the 15 Stations of the Cross at the Dominican Hill and Retreat House for the Catholic faithful to visit for their Holy Week reflection and recollection. The area is now open to the public for free until March 27.

Among the religious activities lined up on March 24 are the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and evening mass at the Baguio Cathedral, Holy Thursday Communion at the UCCP (5:30 p.m.), the Stations of the Cross, Divine Mercy Novena, Seven Last Words, celebration of the Lord’s passion and Procession of the Sto. Emtiero at the Baguio Cathedral on March 25.

In the evening of March 26, there will be an Easter Vigil at the Baguio Cathedral.

Early morning of March 27, the Salubong, assembly for the Blessed Mother, assembly for the Risen Christ, start of the profession and encuantro will be held at the Baguio Cathedral.

The ongoing Spiritual Journey at the camp at the Bell Amphitheater at Camp John Hay will end on March 28.

Apart from the various religious activities, the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasting Club will still hold the search for the Lucky Visitor to promote tourism in the city of pines.

Lucky visitors who will be coming up to Baguio for the first time will be picked from Baguio-bound buses at Rosario, La Union early morning of March 24.

More activities lined up will be expected this long summer vacation in this mountain resort. (Jho Arranz)
