P2-M illegal drugs seized at Manila airport

AUTHORITIES headed by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) foiled an attempt by drug smugglers to sneak in and out of the country some P2-million worth of illegal drugs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Deputy Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the prohibited drugs, such as ecstasy and shabu or methamphetamine hydrochloride, concealed in parcels were confiscated in separate occasions at the NAIA.

In a statement, the bureau said that it has confiscated P1,440,000 worth of ecstasy, in an inbound parcel from Germany and consigned to a Cavite-based recipient. The parcel was declared as amino supplements.

The seized shabu, on the other hand, was concealed in a bicycle and leather shoes.

The culprits tried to hide 53 grams of shabu with approximated value of P265,000 from Quezon City, bound for Saudi Arabia, while the same drug weighing 16 grams worth P80,000 was also buried in a leather shoes bound for Europe.

"We have recommended the immediate issuance of a Summary Decision of Forfeiture against the shipments. Parallel Investigation is ongoing and, consequently, the filing of criminal charges against the perpetrators and their cohorts, if warranted,” Nepomuceno said.

The seizure of the illegal drugs was a concerted efforts by the BOC through the Office of the District Collector, NAIA, Enforcement Group drug specialized team Customs Anti-Illegal Drugs Task Force and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

The culprits violated Section 2530 (f) of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines, and Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (FP/Sunnex)
