AFTER more than a year of delay, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is proceeding with the repair of the tunnel at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.
It will concrete both the tunnel’s entry points—the one in the SRP side and the other on S. Osmeña Blvd.
The project will be undertaken by Virlo Construction Development Corp.
The DPWH will undertake the concreting works first on the entry point leading to the tunnel’s inner lanes.
District Engineer Nicomedes Leonor of the DPWH Cebu City Engineering Office said the City Transportation Office (CTO) approved the project to commence last Feb. 1 yet.
The project was suspended due to several major activities like the International Ironman Triathlon last August, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings last October, the Lapu-Lapu City annual fiesta last November, the moratorium on excavation last December, the Sinulog Festival and the 51st International Eucharistic Congress last January.
Virlo Construction is expected finish the project on June 19.
Meanwhile, DPWH 7 Director Ador Canlas said they hope the opening of the two U-turn slots on the coastal road at the SRP will minimize road accidents in the area.
Canlas said the two U-turn slots were undertaken by WT Construction at the cost of P216.6 million.
Canlas said motorists facing Talisay City who want to return to Cebu City Hall or Plaza Independencia can make a U-turn under the bridge that connects SRP and Talisay City.
Motorists facing Cebu City Hall who want to go back to Talisay City or SM Seaside City can make a U-turn under the bridge that connects SRP and the tunnel.
Canlas said motorists will no longer be allowed to cross the south coastal road to prevent vehicular accidents.
