A FRUIT vendor was shot dead by armed assailants at the Bacolod public plaza past midnight Sunday, March 27.
Police identified the fatality as Gaspar Lamata, 49, of Purok Pilit Uno, Jalandon, Barangay 6, Bacolod City.
Lamata was sleeping on a chair around 12:30 a.m. when an unidentified man fired at him twice using a .45-caliber pistol, who then fled with two companions on board a motorcycle.
Senior Police Officer 2 Arthur Alejano, investigator of Police Station 1, said that according to witnesses, two men visited Lamata’s stall earlier that night to buy fruits. However, Lamata got angry when the two men woke him up.
Alejano said Lamata then left his stall and went to the nearby plaza to have coffee. He then fell asleep on the spot where he was later shot.
The victim sustained wounds in his head and was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police recovered from the scene of the crime two spent .45-caliber casings.
Alejano said police had taken statements from witnesses to determine the identity of the suspects and the motive behind the murder.
The victim’s family told police that Lamata earlier received death threats. (MAP)
