GABRIEL Karlo Tio scored a perfect game to win the first-ever Marie Ernestine School Chess Championship at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
The tournament, which was held as part of the celebration of Marie Ernestine’s 40th anniversary, saw 46 students under the chess curriculum the school launched last year.
Tio, a student from MES Talamban Campus, bested them all as he swept his opponents to get the top honors, scoring a perfect 5.0 points in the competition participated by the Talamban and Lapu-Lapu campuses.
But the big surprise was fourth grader Jacob Tan, who copped the second place finish after besting his older opponents, including sixth grader Cyril Durango in the final round. He only had a single draw in five matches to finish behind Tio with 4.5 points.
Tan and Kyle Matthew Dizon finished the competition with 4.5 points each but the former was crowned first runner-up after having the higher tie break points of 15.5 to 14.0.
The top 10 finishers are Dizon (third), Arc Tudtud (fourth), Gayle Christine Macan (fifth), Jasmine Alyanna Mangila (sixth), Gustavo Larrañaga (seventh), Juro Weigel (eighth), Prince Alvin Redido (ninth) and Durango (10th).
Tio, Tan, Dizon, Tudtud, Macan, Larrañaga, Weigel and Redido are students from the Talamban Campus, which is under the supervision of the Cebu Chess Masters of Therese Gonzales-de la Torre. Mangila and Durango are the only students of Lapu-Lapu Campus, which is handled by IM Kim Steven Yap.
