Davao-Optima rules Mar Villa beach volley

VISITING teams from Davao and Dipolog cities made it to the finals on Easter Sunday’s Ladies Open Beach Volleyball Tournament at Mar Villa beach resort in Opol, Misamis Oriental, in the process exposing the host squads’ unreadiness to meet the challenge off the highly-demanding sweltering sands.

The Davao Optima pair of Venus Flores and Maricel Cabu edged out reigning Camiguin beach volley champion Dipolog City of Shiela Barica and Lany Tormis, 2-1 to bring home the P5,000 top purse plus trophy.

Davao Optima dumped IMCC-Iligan of Suzette Migallos, Angelie Bentic and Sarah Ridal, 25-22, while Dipolog subdued the JEJ-CDO tandem of Danna Pingos and Analyn Cañete, 25-19 in the semifinals.

“Obviously, mas experienced ang Davao ug Dipolog sa beach volley. Pero, at least, naa gihapoy naka-deliver sa ato,” said organizer Alex Adeva of the PVF Northern Mindanao Volleyball Association after JEJ-CDO’s Pingos and Cañete outclassed Iligan Medical College in the fight for third place.

Runner-up Dipolog got P3,000, while third-placer JEJ-CDO and fourth-running Iligan received P2,000 and P1,000 each.

“Yes, beach volley is a different thrill compared to outdoor or indoor volleyball on a cemented floor. I’m almost tempted to participate, though na feel nako na dili pa ko ready,” said the youthful Kring-Kring Pepania, a member of Xavier University’s volleyball coaching staff.

Corpus Christi was the only high school team that participated in the day-long Easter Sunday sports spectacle, parading the likes of April Macale, Areb Mesa, Joy Lugatiman, Ashley Macale, Hope Lugatiman and Jubelia Cabingas.
