MCWD to start work on pipeline in bridge

THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) has signed a contract with Jegma Construction for the water pipeline support system, which will be affected by the repair of Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.

The repair of the bridge, which Jegma handles for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), resumed last April 2, as ordered by Director Ador Canlas.

MCWD Public Affairs Manager Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara said the project duration is six months, starting this month, at a total cost of P5.9 million.

Kara said the project will include the replacement of the pipe support with hot dipped galvanized iron metal rods and repairs on the pipe.

Simultaneous

“MCWD is still processing the permit with DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) so work can start right away. Jegma said the pipe support repair can be done simultaneously with the bridge rehabilitation,” Kara said.

As agreed with Jegma, Kara said the new hot dipped galvanized iron rods will be installed under the bridge to support the pipe. The old or existing pipe support may stay or may be removed later.

Canlas said that as early as October 2015, DPWH already informed MCWD about the repair of the bridge that may affect its pipeline, but it failed to come up with its own repair plan.

But with the signing of an agreement with Jegma, MCWD can secure its water pipe simultaneously with the bridge repair.

Kara said that MCWD has 17,000 service connections, both residential and commercial, in Lapu-Lapu City and the adjacent town of Cordova.

The MCWD’s 400-mm (16inch) diameter pipeline brings 12,000 cubic meters of water to the MCWD consumers in Mactan Island.

Kara said MCWD’s total daily production is 214,000 cubic meters, including Mactan’s Island consumption.

There are an additional 5,000 cubic meters this month from Abejo Waters Corp. for its Cabangcalan, Mandaue City injection point; 11,000 cubic meters from Cebu Manila Water Development (per bulk supply contract); and 5,000 cubic meters from CMWD to cushion the impact of El Niño.
