7 Koreans charged for online gamble

SEVEN Koreans were charged yesterday for illegally operating an online numbers game inside the two houses they rented in Barangay Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City.

Through a search warrant, members of the City Intelligence Branch (CIB) led by Police Chief Insp. Mark Gifter Sucalit arrested the foreigners past 8:30 p.m. last Friday.

Senior Insp. Verniño Noserale of CIB said they served a search warrant to Solji Kim, 31, a Casino employee from South Korea.

The warrant was issued by Judge Toribio Quiwag of Regional Trial Court Branch 27 of Lapu-Lapu City Hall of Justice last March 31.

Noserale said they had monitored the illegal numbers game for about two weeks.

Police found the suspects inside the houses rented by Kim at Block 23, Lot 4, Pine St. and Block 15, Lot 3, Champaca St. in Barangay Marigondon.

Kim was arrested.

The other suspects who were caught in the act operating the online gambling were Lee Jae Hyung, 31; Oh Jeong Yeon, 21; Lee Yun Hwan, 31; Kim Si Hwan, 31; Han Jeh Hoon, 25; and Park Dae Gwan, 31.

Noserale said the suspects did not resist when they were arrested.

Four laptops, three computer desktops, wi-fi routers, keyboards, laptop chargers, computer mouse, external hard drives, USBs and a mobile phone were seized from the suspects.

Yesterday, CIB personnel filed violations of Republic Act 9287 (An Act Increasing the Penalties of Illegal Number Games, Amending Certain Provisions of Presidential Decree 1602, and for Other Purposes) in relation to Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Noserale said the Koreans did not avail themselves of a preliminary investigation.

“(There was) no pornographic materials. Wa tay nakuha ana (We did not found any),” he added.

Suspects were detained at the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office awaiting for the prosecutor’s resolution.
