Council bet junks poster, uses magazine in campaign

A LOCALLY-produced campaign magazine was launched by a candidate for Cebu City councilor yesterday.

Tinago Barangay Captain Joel Garganera, who is Team Rama’s councilorial bet in the north district, said he came up with the “Panday Mag” to level up his campaign from the usual posters.

Para nako kanang postering, medyo hugaw kaayo ba (It looks dirty). Okay ra ug imo ra (It’s ok if it’s only you who’s posting.) But when others start to post their posters more, medyo ugly na tan-awon. I opted not to do what the other politcians are doing,” he said.

Garganera recalled that when he ran as city councilor in 2010, it took him three weeks to remove all his campaign posters.

Pag-apil nako grabe akong postering. I spent like almost three weeks palimpyo sa akong poster. Unya, pildi pa gyod. Sakit kaayo ba (Worse, I lost),” he said.

Garganera’s campaign magazine is generally written in Cebuano and contains testimonials about his deeds by friends and those he had worked with.

“Regardless of what’s the outcome of this election, at least they (voters) know me better,” said Garganera, who has been in the public service for 27 years.

Testimonials

The magazine includes testimonials from former Cebu governor Vicente “Tingting” de la Serna, Tisha Gabuya Ylaya, also known as Inday Tikay, Val Sandiego of San Diego Dance Company, and Marc Canton of Movement for a Liveable Cebu.

“They’re the ones telling stories about me,” Garganera said.

He said the magazine is informative, colorful, environmental-friendly and better than a “hard sell.”

The magazine also laid down some of Garganera’s accomplishments in his years in government.

Garganera produced around 10,000 copies of the magazine, which will be distributed to the barangays in the north district today.

The barangay captain spent P35,000 for its publication.

This way, he said, he no longer sees the need to post his own campaign posters, although he can’t stop if Team Rama posts campaign materials for him on his behalf.

In a news conference yesterday, Garganera said his campaign magazines is in addition to the 27 campaign billboards he had installed in different strategic places in the north district.

He said it symbolizes his 27 years in public service as well as his birth date. Garganera was born in April 27. Lorraine Mitzi Ambrad, USJ-R Intern
