A taste of opera music at The Ruins

IN EUROPEAN tradition, performers entertained in castles and palaces in celebration of a special occasion. Also, I have seen concerts in Venice done in chapels and churches where acoustics are superb.

Angie Rubin Hasibar, who is from Negros Occidental but now a resident of Vienna, Austria where she teaches piano lessons. She organized fund raising concerts called “Children Helping Children,” a concert in an open air arena which was conceptualized together with a group of friends. The Ruins in Talisay City was the best choice for the event.

Angie’s inspiration came from Verona, Italy where operas are held al fresco. The evening was to be a classical opera and operetta musical highlighting young artists of Negros. Music historians vouch that food plays an important role in Italian operas. So to complete the total concept, food and wine were served.

Through Angie’s efforts, Emmanuel Aller, a tenor, and Sarah Jane Laurico, a soprano, were part of this first ever concert. She also managed to bring in two of the best rondallas in Negros Island, the Kabataang Silay Ensemble and the JGM-NOHS Rondalla. The NOHS chorale also added flavor to the concert.

Flamenco dancers Tina Jalandoni Feria and Jennifer Gochangco with ballet dancer trained in Austria Georgette Sanchez-Vargas, along with other dancers Rhon Nacis, Bernice Garces, Narc Balucay and Ramon Yusay tripped us to the light fantastic.

Also to make “A Taste of Opera Music at the Ruins” a laudable success, EJ Allen Don Debulgado played the marimba. All these were put together by director Rene Hinojales.

Proceeds went to the Visayan Center for Hotel and Restaurants Services Inc. and the food was prepared by the school’s students and by Mia Gonzaga of Kusina Mia. Isabel Montelibano provided the yummy cheeses from her Casa Del Fornaggio.

Participants, performers and guests all enjoyed the evening of great food, wine and performances.

We should have more concerts like this!
