Tell it to Sun.Star: Teachers during elections

WE are about to choose another set of public officials who will be our leaders for the next three years and teachers have a great part in this political exercise. They will serve as Board of Election inspectors (BEIs) and support staff to make the flow of the election smooth.

Even how tedious the work is, teachers do it because they are public servants and it is not a question to them how minimal the honorarium is. Yet when the election is over, teachers are stoned with words degrading to them, like those accusing them of cheating in favor of a candidate.

How can that be? There are watchers around for all particioating political parties. Are these teachers insane enough to exchange their professional license for a meager amount given in an election? I don't think so.

By the way, note that according to the Association of Concerned Teachers (ACT), teachers have the right to say no on whether they should serve in an election or not.

I hope that the spread of this negative notion against teachers who will serve in the coming election will end and instead they will be given credit for all the hard work they haveve done.--Lorena Labora-Sumile of Bonbon, Cebu City
