Davao booters blank Cagayan Valley, 5-0

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato - Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) elementary booters drew first blood by eking out a shutout 5-0 victory over Cagayan Valley Region Athletic Association (Cavraa) in a pre-opening football match at the Bicol University Old Pitch in Legazpi City on Saturday.

Davraa elementary football coach Rey Henry "Ewee" De Leon, in a phone interview, said, "Lumalaban naman ang Cagayan Valley pero mas magaling lang mga players natin."

Raphael Balan netted two goals for Davraa as teammates Simon Guino-o, Alan Caintic and James Paje secured one goal each.

De Leon, who is coaching Davraa's Palaro team for the first time, said he is confident of the team's chances this year.

"May laban tayo, malakas ang chances na makapasok sa top four. Sana nga mag-champion pero ipagdasal din natin. Tiwala naman ako sa mga bata."

Davao will play against Western Visayas on Monday but De Leon is uncertain if it is the highly-touted Negros team.

"Western Visayas ang susunod na makakalaro namin pero hindi naman siguro ito yung sa Negros. Kaya natin sila, kakayanin," he added.

His squad is also bannered by Jasper Rex Lim, Jemriz Advincula, Gabriel Cuevas, Resty dela Cruz, Al-Quitso Diabo, Vito Echavez, Zane Garfin, Justine Las Pinas, James Mendros, Naz Pascual and Sebastian Rendon.

Davraa is in bracket B along with Mimaropa Region and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

Davraa's secondary football team, meanwhile, was set to collide with Armm 6 p.m. Saturday. The Davraa team of coach Albert Ryan Lim joins Bicol Region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Caraga in bracket D.

Teams will play the sing round robin format group elimination to determine the top two squads in each of the four brackets for the quarterfinals.

Other elimination games resume today although the opening ceremonies is all set in the afternoon.

Davraa aims to improve its overall standing this year after placing ninth in the Palaro held in Tagum City last year.

But reports reaching Sun.Star Davao while covering the weeklong 2016 National Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Championship here said that different Davraa teams trained on their own.

Davao Prisaa secondary athletes who competed here, however, returned to Davao City Wednesday evening to catch the bus going to Legazpi City as they also will see action in the Palaro.

Among them are National Prisaa secondary multiple athletics gold medalist Jomar Angga and secondary chess gold medalists Bhing Joel Gimony and Honey Grace Buenafe.
