Mendoza: All systems go for Palarong Pambansa 2015

It is all systems go for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa 2015 here in Davao Region with the Province of Davao del Norte as the main host. The Opening Program will be held today even as some of the sporting events were played yesterday while the Closing Program will be on May 9.

DILG Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas III will be the Keynote Speaker with Tesda Director General Joel Villanueva also providing inspiration to the more than 11,000 participants from 17 regions. The more than 7,000 athletes culled from the above total will participate in 17 regular sports events, four demonstration sports - billiards, wushu, wrestling and futsal and the special games for the special athletes. The theme of this year's Palaro is, Sports: Breaking Borders, Building Peace"

The lighting of the friendship flame will be spearheaded by Palaro 2014 Table Tennis Gold Medalist Kyla Cielo Bernaldez of the Division of Panabo City with the Davao del Norte Icons, the featured national sports heroes, the 2015 Palaro selected athletes, and with the special participation of District I Representative Anthony Rafael G. del Rosario.

According to the organizers, the symbolic torch of this year's Games, connecting the country through sports, is made up of 3 parts - the top inspired by the tambara, an altar where lumads make their offerings to the spirits; the middle made up of authentic materials from the Muslim culture, including the sequins, and the bottom which is a chalice depicting Christianity.

It could be recalled that 38 days before the opening of the Palarong Pambansa 2015 at the Formal Launching of the said sporting event, host Davao del Norte had already received outstanding marks from Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro FSC

In his speech, Luistro commended the preparations and said Davao del Norte could establish a benchmark for all future editions of the annual Palaro.

Luistro added that it was really the first time that he really feels and senses that we are one month ahead of the preparations for the Palarong Pambansa.

From the press release of DepEd Central Office, Luistro was quoted he was impressed by how Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario, kept his promise of delivering a remarkable and "the best Palarong Pambansa thus far."

DavNor Governor del Rosario assures the security by having 1,500 military and police personnel deployed during the course of Palaro and said that the region is generally peaceful because it is located in the metropolitan area.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte whose City is the main entrance of most of the delegates also assured the safety of the athletes, coaches, chaperons and officials from the 17 regions.

However, Sec. Luistro still reminded the coaches and chaperons to ensure the safety of the student athletes and for regional officials to take into consideration the welfare of the "Stars of Palaro" from the time they leave their provinces, through Palaro, and until they return, they are under our care. Luistro reminded them to make sure that an adult is always present to supervise them, especially the young ones.

Assistant Secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs and Palarong Pambansa Secretary General Tonisito Umali said that DepEd and the provincial host is working towards improving the safety of the athletes starting with the teachers and school administrators, making sure that the schools to be used as billeting quarters are safe for the students.

Deped 11 Regional Director Alberto T. Escobarte conducted the finalization meeting with the members of the execom even on a holiday, May 1, to thresh out minor details and issues on the Palaro 2015 at the Tagum City National High School, the billeting quarters of Davao Eagles.

This corner hopes that this year's edition of Palarong Pambansa will really be the best ever.
