ZAMBOANGA CITY (Updated) -- Three people were injured and four houses were damaged when a magnitude 6 earthquake shook Zamboanga Peninsula Region on Thursday morning .
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) said the tremor occurred at 2:21 a.m. Thursday, April 14.
Dr. Elmeir Apolinario of the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) identified the injured victims as Arcina Natividad, 56; Raymond Natividad, 23; and Juliana Makahibag, 13.
Apolinario said the victims are all residents of Kalinaw Urban Poor Association in the village of Sinunuc, Zamboanga City.
The victims were injured when the concrete divider of their house, which is still under construction, collapsed while they were asleep at the living room.
The victims were rushed to the hospital by responding CDRRMO personnel.
The houses owned by Juanito Remboy, Viviana Huhian and Marieta Abequibel were also damaged during the quake.
The Philvocs said the tremor was felt at Intensity 6 in Zamboanga City while Intensity 5 was felt in the towns of Baliguian and Siocon in Zamboanga del Norte.
Intensity 4 was also felt in Gutalac, Labason, and Sibuco in Zamboanga del Norte, Ipil and Titay in Zamboanga Sibugay, Pagadian City, and Isabela City in Basilan, while Intensity 3 was felt in Salug and Liloy in Zamboanga del Norte.
The Philvocs said the quake’s origin was tectonic and had a depth of 47 kilometers. Its epicentre was traced at 17 kilometers northwest of Baligiuan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Zamboanga City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climac-Salazar has ordered the City Social Welfare and Development Service Office to provide the necessary assistance to affected families in Barangay Sinunuc. (Sunnex)
