Cane worker in Murcia killed by lightning

A SUGARCANE worker was killed after he was hit by a lightning at Hacienda Puyas in Barangay Blumentritt, Murcia town, on Wednesday, April 13.

Police identified the fatality as Julius Barrios, 32, a local resident.

Senior Inspector Lawrence Gerald Bathan, town police chief, said Barrios was plowing a sugarcane field when he was struck by lightning around 2:30 p.m.

Barrios was brought to a hospital but was declared dead upon arrival, Bathan added.

Bathan said the victim’s carabao was also hit by the lightning.

In Bago City, a farm laborer was hacked to death in Purok Tisa, Barangay Mailum, Tuesday, April 12.

Police identified the fatality as Abondio Caballe, 46.

Superintendent David Cachumbo, city police chief, said Caballe was allegedly hacked by his brother-in-law Renald “Rorok” Laguyo, who fled after the incident.

Police are looking at a land dispute as the motive.

Also, a man died while his minor-aged companion was injured after their motorcycle hit a parked truck in Purok Aquarius, Barangay Tabunan, Bago City on Tuesday, police records showed.

Police identified the fatality as Jeffrey Hilado of Himamaylan town in Negros Occidental.

Meanwhile, a farmer was injured after he was shot at Sitio Candida in Barangay Bi-ao Binalbagan town Tuesday.

Police identified the victim as Renz Damirez of Sitio Mangahoykahoy, Barangay Santol.

Senior Inspector Albert Sy, town police chief, said the victim was allegedly shot by Jun Panerio, a resident of the town, who was drunk.

Sy said Damirez’s family will not pursue the case against Panerio, who is at large.
