Moises and Palmares: Love politics

Michelle: You have to love the way people nowadays are so passionate about politics, pushing for their preferred candidates and discussing issues, platforms, their worries and fears and their hopes for a better nation. Aren’t you proud of how aware our citizenry have become and how involved and informed many are, that even those who have previously shied away from voting are now advocating to exercise our right to choose our leaders? That’s democracy at work! We may disagree but we can agree to disagree. Just like any relationship, we cannot impose our views or beliefs and expect the other to follow blindly. There has to be respect for one another; otherwise, we become resentful and angry. And just like any relationship where there is nothing or no one that is perfect, we have our choices among imperfect leaders. Elections in our country are far from perfect but at least in our country we can still vote.

DJ: The right to vote and be voted upon is a sacred duty. Likened to a relationship, there must be a serious commitment from those who want to be voted and for us who are voting. I believe now is the time to do some serious house cleaning and make a difference. Times are hard. But we can still choose not to be among the been-there-done-that skeptics. We can decide to do something. Even as simple as deciding to go out and troop to the poll centers come election day to make our vote count!

M: We can’t change our decayed system overnight but we can start changing ourselves today—by looking into our hearts to determine our priorities, heeding our conscience and doing what is right. If we are choosy about our partners, setting a standard that meets our essentials and preferences, we should also choose our leaders well. And even if we have different choices from our family members and friends, we can still love and be loving toward them. No need to unfamily or unfriend! I’m glad though that I share the same choices as my family and many of my friends.

DJ: I have chosen who to vote for and I respect others who do not share my preference. For me, in any job application, experience and skill should match the requirement of the position applied for. Same goes for those who run for public office. My vote will not go to those without positive results and political acrobats who shift loyalties to suit their selfish ambitions.

M: Ultimately it’s the choices that we make—individually or as a people, that can change the course of our nation’s history. We are at a critical point that I believe that whoever will win must be able to unify our country and lead decisively, courageously and with humility. With great power comes great responsibility and with great responsibility comes a greater accountability.

DJ: Let’s be wiser when we exercise our right to vote and stay clear from those who lie and cheat just to win. Let’s vote for a candidate who can point to us the right direction and can also take us to that direction. We need leaders who have competence, courage, dedication and above all, integrity. They are people who stand in truth and are clear about it. If we choose with love for our country, love for our family and love for our brothers and sisters especially the least of our brethren, there is no reason we cannot make the right choices.
