BANGUED, Abra -- Abrenians are given the opportunity to make informed decisions and choices come May 9,
2016 through the PiliPinas 2016 aired live over DZPA-CMN radio.
The PiliPinas 2016 is a Candidates’ Forum initiated by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to give equal
opportunities to all candidates to present their political platforms and respond to people’s reactions,
opinions, questions or appeals.
Conducted by community leaders representing the various agencies and organizations who serve as partners,
the forum is in partnership with the Comelec in pushing for a clean, honest, authentic, meaningful and
peaceful May 9, 2016 national and local elections.
The forum started April 5 with the candidates for the position of House Representative for the Lone
District of Abra, followed by the candidates for provincial positions from the governor, vice governor and
the members of the Provincial Board.
Issues and concerns raised during the forum were a compilation of the texted messages from the general
public through the facilities of radio DZPA-CMN with the help of working committee composed of
representatives from the Abra Peace Conveners’ Group, the Concerned Citizens of Abra for Good Government,
the academe, tribal communities, the youth and the media.
Issues vary from jueteng to environment, economic activities particularly on livelihood and employment,
education with emphasis on the K to 12 curriculum and the adoption of mother tongue, social services
especially on the issue of doctors giving prescriptions of medicines that are not available in the
government hospitals, peace and order particularly the use of violence in political campaigns, and energy
with focus on the problem of the Abra Electric Cooperative that had been cut of power supply for several
times due to failure of management to operate and management its affairs smoothly.
The forum does not only allow the candidates to present their platforms and respond to issues and concerns
raised by the public through the panel of interpellators, but are also made to declare their commitments
to address the issues and concerns raised, once elected into public office. (PIA-Cordillera)
