Duterte, Garcia, Rama lead in Sun.Star online poll

PRESIDENTIAL candidate Rodrigo Duterte, Cebu gubernatorial bet Winston Garcia, and reelectionist Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama came on top in the election survey conducted by Sun.Star Publishing Inc. through Survey Monkey, an online survey development cloud-based company.

The survey ran only for five days on the Sun.Star website, at www.sunstar.com.ph, instead of the initial plan to have it open until April 30, to prevent possible vote-rigging. It is part of a series of online surveys Sun.Star will run to gauge which candidates readers of the website will support in the upcoming national and local elections.

President, Vice President

Based on results, Duterte, who is currently Davao City mayor, was the preferred successor of President Benigno Aquino III, with 38,557 votes or 61.9 percent of the total 62,289 respondents.

Duterte was followed by Vice President Jejomar Binay, who got 19.4 percent (12,106); former Interior secretary Mar Roxas with 10.4 percent (6,500); Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, with 4.5 percent (2,790); and Senator Grace Poe with 3.8 percent (2,336).

In the vice presidential race, Duterte's runningmate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, ranked first with 26,203 votes or 44 percent of the total 59,571 respondents.

Leni Robredo was second with 20.8 percent of votes (12,378), followed by Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. with 16.5 percent (9,816); Gringo Honasan, with 14.6 percent (8.699); Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero, with 2.7 percent (1,613); and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, with 1.4 percent or 862 votes.

Governor, Vice Governor

Sun.Star also polled its online readers from Cebu, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro -- three major areas where Sun.Star has a newspaper -- to determine who would likely win in the local elections.

Out of the 58,924 respondents, 31,251 or 53 percent were from Cebu, 7,065 (21 percent) from Davao, 1,287 (2.2 percent) from Cagayan de Oro, and 19,321 or 32.8 percent were from other areas in the country.

Of the respondents who entered Cebu as their voting address, only 5,124 picked a Cebu governor. Leading the vice gubernatorial race based on the results is One Cebu's bet Winston Garcia, who got 2,531 votes or 49.4 percent, followed by Hilario Davide III of Liberal Party (LP) with 2,055 votes or 40.1 percent.

The other candidates running for Cebu governor only got not more than 300 votes.

Garcia's runningmate, Nerissa Soon-Ruiz, was also ahead of Davide's runningmate, Agnes Magpale, with 46.3 percent of votes (2,354 out of 5,088 responses). Magpale only got 40.8 percent or 2,076 votes. Nene Montenegro was third with 12.9 percent or 658 votes.

Mayor, Vice Mayor

About 25,618 respondents from Cebu are voters of Cebu City, and as of midnight of April 18, about 17,444 (69.5 percent) participants voted for Mike Rama as Cebu City mayor, while 7,664 (30.5 percent) chose Tomas Osmeña.

Rama's runningmate, Edgardo Labella, got the highest votes in the vice mayoral race with 18,685 out of the total 24,795 responses. Osmeña's runningmate, Nestor Archival, got 6,100 votes.

In Mandaue City, Emmarie "Lolypop" Ouano-Dizon of One Cebu ranked first with 1,068 respondents voting for her as the next mayor. Luigi Quisumbing of LP was second with only 378 votes out of the total 1,446 responses.

Ouano-Dizon's runningmate, Toben Andaya, also got the highest votes, with 897 out of the 1,430 total votes. Second was Quisumbing's runningmate, Carlo Pontico Fortuna, with 395 votes, and third was Estanislao Sanchez Jr. with 138 votes.

In Lapu-Lapu City, Jun Pelaez of the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) will likely win the mayoral race with 495 votes out of 876 responses. Second was Lando Patalinhug of PDP-Laban with 190 votes, followed by Paz Radaza of LP with only 156 votes.

Rudy Taneo of NPC was also the preferred candidate for Lapu-Lapu City vice mayor with 420 out of 869 total votes. He was followed by Rufo Amores III of PDP-Laban with 235 votes, and Marcial Ycong of Liberal Party with 171 votes.

Former Cebu representative Eduardo Gullas is also likely to win the mayoral race in Talisay City, as he got 206 out of the 449 total votes. Romeo Villarante got 127 votes, and incumbent Mayor Johnny "JVR" De los Reyes had 90 votes.

Alan Bucao ranked first in the Talisay City vice mayoral race with 193 votes, followed by Danny Caballero with 175 and Dennis Basillote with 76 votes.

In Davao City, the tandem of Sara Duterte and Paolo Duterte dominated the poll, while in Cagayan de Oro City, incumbent Mayor Oscar Moreno will still likely win as mayor in the May 9 elections with 493 out of the 1,010 total responses. His closest rival, Rufus Rodriguez, got 310 votes.

Moreno's runningmate, Raineir Joaquin Uy, also ranked first in the vice mayoral race with 365 votes, followed by Roger Abaday with 320, and Ian Acenas with 303 votes out of the 988 total responses.

Participants to Sun.Star's survey were polled on www.sunstar.com.ph and through Facebook, where a link to the survey page was promoted.

Results were non-statistical, which means they cannot be used to predict the actual outcome of the May 9 elections, as they were just based on the answers provided by the respondents whose IP (internet protocol) addresses were recorded by Survey Monkey, a third party where Sun.Star has no control over.

An IP address is a unique address that identifies the computer or device used on the internet or a network. It can be traced to a computer but not a person. (Sunnex)
