BI arrests Canadian fugitive

A CANADIAN national wanted for drug pushing and other criminal activities in the United States was arrested in Makati City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Wednesday.

BI Commissioner Ronaldo Geron said Lachlan Scott, 58, a Canadian national, was apprehended last Tuesday at his residence in Makati City by members of BI's Fugitive Search Unit.

The apprehending unit was armed with a mission order, which the BI chief issued at the request of the Canadian and American embassies in Manila.

The foreigner will be deported to United States to stand trial before a district court in Minnesota where the suspect was charged with violating the US federal food, drug and cosmetic act; introduction of misbranded drugs into interstate commerce; conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud; and unlawful distribution and dispensing of a controlled substance.

Lawyer Jose Carlitos Licas, BI Fugitive Search Unit head, Scott will be deported as soon as the bureau has secured the necessary clearances for his deportation.

The fugitive is now an undocumented alien because of the cancellation of his passport by the Canadian government.

"He will then be included in our blacklist to prevent him from returning to the Philippines after he is deported," Licas said. (FP/Sunnex)
