Baguio athletes shine in National Para Games

DIFFERENTLY abled athletes from the city stamped their class by snaring 12 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals during the recently concluded National Paralympic Games in Metro Manila.

Bulk of the medals were garnered by the athletes of the city came from the various track and field events.

The National Paralympic Games serves as the elimination round for the country’s representatives to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Paralympic Games in Metro Manila.

Allan Campos led Baguio’s charge bagging three golds in discuss throw, javelin throw and shot put, Jackson Limmayog, who also brought home three golds in the 200, 400 and 800-meter dashes, Jaime Manginga who snared two golds in discuss throw and javelin throw and Agustina Bantiloc who also got two golds in the javelin throw and shot put.

Other gold medal winners were Roemo Tayawa I and Agustin Kitan in bench press.

The multi-silver medalists were Giovanni Ola who brought home three medals in the discus throw, shot put and javeline throw while Bantiloc garnered two medals in the bench press and discuss throw.

Other silver medallists were Gregorio Rollie in badminton and Capos in the male category of the similar event.

Daniel Padilan garnered two bronze medals in discuss throw and javelin throw, Carlos Gamboc got a bronze medal in badminton while Jackson Limayog brought home the bronze in the 100meter dash and Abraham Sakiwat took the bronze in the discus throw.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan commended the differently abled athletes from the city, saying their achievement in the recently-concluded National Paralympic Games only shows local Paralympic athletes can compete in regional, national and even international events with flying colors.

“We challenge our athletes to continue sharing the limelight in various competitions and sustain bringing honor and pride to our beloved city,” Domogan stressed.

Domogan said the City Government will continue to develop programs that will empower potential athletes from persons with disabilities who will be able to continue representing the city in various competitions in order to uplift the status of one of the marginalized sectors of the city.

The local chief executive wished the winners the best of luck in their expected participation to future international events, citing that they must continue to strive for excellence in order to give honor and pride to their respective families and the city as a hole. (Baguio PIO)
