Body wants 60 days before new routing

THE Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team) asked the Mandaue City Council for another 60-day extension before implementing the new traffic scheme in the city.

Once a resolution is approved, Team will implement the non-stop lane at the intersection of Butuanon Bridge and allow trucks to pass below Maguikay flyover going to Cebu City, said Team Executive Director Archt. Florentino Nimor.

The City Council, earlier, approved a resolution sponsored by Councilor Elstone Dabon, chair of the committee on transportation, which authorized Team to conduct a 60-day dry run for the new traffic scheme across the City.

Team implemented several no-left-turn policies in different areas in the city.

Among these areas where the no-left-turn policy is existing are J.P. Rizal St., going to Paknaan and Tabok; M.C. Briones St., going to Sitio Sudlon, Maguikay; vehicles coming from the Subangdaku flyover going to E.O. Perez St.; and those coming from Hernan Cortes St. going to Lopez Jaena St.

Daghan pa gyud. Di man mahimo nga dunganon (There are still new traffic scheme that were not implemented. We cannot just implement all these in one time),” Nimor said.

For the non-stop lane, it will be the outer lane of the road at the intersection of Butuanon Bridge for the vehicles coming from J.P. Rizal St. going to M.C. Briones St.

Aside from this, light vehicles passing M.C. Briones St. will be directed to pass through the flyover, while trucks weighing 4,500 kgs. and above will go straight to the highway below the flyover.

Report

Before these new traffic schemes will be implemented, the Team should first render a report on what was implemented in the 60-day dry run, Councilor Dabon told Sun.Star Cebu.

Dabon said Team recommended for a 60-day extension to fully implement the new traffic scheme.

Dabon will sponsor another resolution on this during the City Council’s regular session on Wednesday.

Recently, Team allowed a two-way traffic on a portion of P. Burgos St., specifically on the corner of UN Ave. up to the corner of G. Ouano St, from a one-way traffic.

Nimor said this will continue until the issue on the private lot on Abra St. will be resolved.

New route

Abra St. was supposed to be the new route of the tricycles coming from D.M. Cortes St. (formerly known as Plaridel St.) going to the City proper, but this was temporarily not used after a private lot owner disallowed the tricycles to pass.

Alexis Baylosis, who travels everyday using his private car from his house in Barangay Pagsabungan, saw the need for Team to be given another 60 days to implement the additional new traffic schemes due to the City’s traffic situation.

Baylosis said UN Ave. and DM Cortes St. are critical areas because traffic congestion is always experienced in these roads.

Without a flyover, he believed that traffic will still continue.

JD Layos, who goes to work on a motorcycle from his house in Barangay Bakilid, suggested that proper assessment should be done first before traffic adjustment.

Layos feared that all the new traffic schemes will not be again implemented because in the first 60-day dry run, Team was not able to assess the right timing for the new traffic scheme.

He appreciated Team’s implementation of no-left-turn policy, just like in E.O. Perez St. because idle roads are now being used.
