Davide vows to make water 'a priority' if reelected

CEBU CITY -- Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III vowed Tuesday, April 26, to make water supply a priority under his administration, if he will be reelected in the May 9 elections.

"If (Agnes) Magpale and I will be reelected, I will ask mayors to provide water source to the people and make water a priority," Davide said during the Mega Cebu candidates forum Tuesday.

He cited a case in Tabuelan town, where he said people in 10 barangays have to walk a kilometer to be able to get water. "But the Province talked to Tabuelan officials, we helped solve the problem, and now water is already abundant in the area," Davide said.

Vice Governor Agnes Magpale said that the Province had signed a memorandum of agreement with Manila Water Co. Inc. to do a feasibility study and look for other possible sources of water in Cebu.

The project may be completed in two years, she added.

As to traffic problem and solid waste management in Metro Cebu, Davide said that he will go by the recommendations of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) in the roadmap study to address the concerns.

"Mangayo gyud ta'g tabang (We must seek help)," he said.

The Jica roadmap study, which was started in 2013, names 10 flagship projects for implementation by 2020, aside from programs that were scheduled to be complete by 2050.

Among the projects are a mass transit network development, traffic control, solid waste management, dam and septage plants, bridge construction, port construction, and an integrated flood and drainage system. (LMY/Sunnex)
