Security guard, suspect wounded in SRP theft

A SECURITY guard was wounded while responding to a theft alarm at the South Road Properties at 12:10 a.m. in Mambaling, Cebu City yesterday.

Security guard Stephen Vales, 28, was shot in his left cheek by a certain “Allan” while he was trying to arrest a suspected thief.

Vales had caught Jenel Rey Basteda, 22, stealing electrical wires in Gate 3 of the South Road Properties at 12:10 a.m. and called his attention. While trying to arrest Basteda, Allan fired.

Police team

Vales reported the incident to Police Station 11 in Mambaling.

PO2 Serbert Arreglo and his team responded to the alarm and proceeded to Barangay Mambaling.

When Basteda saw the policemen, he ran towards Sitio Lawis, Barangay Alaska.

The police team followed him there and cornered Basteda.

Gun

When PO2 Arreglo was about to arrest Basteda, Basteda pulled out a gun and aimed it at the policeman.

Arreglo shot Basteda and hit him in the leg.

Wounded, Basteda refused to surrender and continued aiming his gun at Arreglo.

Arreglo fired again and hit Basteda in his arm, which led to his arrest.

Basteda was brought to Vicente Sotto Medical Center and will face charges for violation of the election gun ban. Samantha Zenn S. Ares, CNU Intern
