Leni: Negros with me from the start

LIBERAL Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo expressed Tuesday her gratitude to the officials and the people of Negros Occidental for supporting her since she declared her bid for the second highest post of the land.

“Kahit talunan ako noong umpisa, pero patuloy ang suportang ibinibigay ng mga opisyal ng Negros Occidental. Sa pangalawang balik namin sa Negros Occidental, mas uminit pa ang pagsuporta ng mga taga dito sa amin,” Robredo said during their sortie in Cadiz City, where an estimated 30,000 people attended.

In the April 18-20 Business World-SWS Pre-Election Survey, Robredo topped the poll with 26 percent in statistical tie with Ferdinand Marcos Jr., with 25 percent.

The lawmaker from Camarines Sur said she remains hopeful that she will be able to sustain the lead in the homestretch of the campaign.

In a press conference in Bacolod, Robredo recounted her poll standing when she began her bid for the vice presidency, saying that she started very low.

“When I was starting, I was sixth of six at one percent. My awareness level was very low. The frontrunner then was more than 40 percent. Mine was more of a “suntok sa buwan,” she said.

Robredo added: “But over the next few months, I registered a very consistent rise in the poll survey. It was slowly but surely. We hit our target in March wherein I landed in Top 3. On April, I am No. 2. In fact, there were two surveys already and many surveys coming out. Most of the surveys, I was in No. 2 with different gaps. There were two survey results that came out in SWS survey that I was No. 1. However, such is not yet a comfortable lead. There are still odds against me in the sense that I came from behind. Now, it is a combination of many things.”

She said that in Negros, their volunteers are very hard working.

“While LP is very organized, still the people’s campaign will help more which is parallel to the political campaign,” she said.

Robredo added that she needs more time to campaign in Luzon because her standing at the National Capital Region (NCR) is still very low.

Although she is “already No. 1 in the Visayas, No. 1 in Mindanao, No. 1 in Bicol, I will not spend more time in North Luzon.”

“The battle ground is Regions 3, 4, and NCR. If you look at the numbers now, the NCR standing is very low. Historically, it is always anti-administration. But then, I am not giving it up. We discussed that for the next 13 days, 60 percent of the time will be spent in Luzon and in Metro Manila,” she said.

Robredo added that the election trend now is different because the campaign not issue-based, and the consideration of the voters is more on personalities or those who capture the imagination.

Robredo appealed to the voters in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City voters to help them win the election along with LP presidential candidate Manuel Roxas, II and all the LP senatorial candidates.

“I ask for your help. Please look for candidates who have the character and integrity to deliver what was promised. Don’t waste the sacred value of your votes on the many considerations which are temporary. Dwell on the character of the candidates. That should be the measure that every voter should consider. Our right choice is our contribution to our children and the future generations,” she said.
