500 'grant-in-aid' students graduate

OVER 500 beneficiaries of Students Grant-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (SGP-PA) in Davao Region graduated this year from various institutions, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Davao said.

DSWD-Davao assistant director for operations Rebecca Santamaria said of the 503 total students, 168 graduated in Davao del Norte, 209 in Davao Oriental, 25 in Davao del Sur, 68 in Davao Occidental and 33 in Davao City.

Santamaria said a regional graduation ceremony dubbed as "Social Investiture for National Achievers of Grants-in-Aid (Sinag)" will be held in Tagum City on May 6, to recognize these scholars of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.

The SGP-PA started in 2012 and is being implemented by the DSWD in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) and the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole). The SGP-PA has now 40,000 beneficiaries.

"Indeed, the program helps in increasing the number of graduates in higher education among Pantawid households. This also gets the graduates employed in high-value added jobs to lift their families out of poverty," Santamaria said.

The primary objective of the program is to ensure that the grantees are enrolled in state universities and colleges duly recognized by the Ched.
