Ex-Chief Justice Renato Corona dies at 67

MANILA (Updated) -- Ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona passed away early morning Friday, April 29, due to cardiac arrest. He was 67.

Corona, the country's 23rd Chief Justice, succumbed to cardiac arrest at 1:48 a.m., the Supreme Court's Public Information Office said.

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno ordered that the flag in the Supreme Court and all courts nationwide be flown at half-mast to mourn the passing of the former Chief Justice.

Malacanang has extended its sympathies to the Corona family.

"We extend our condolences to the bereaved family of late CJ Renato Corona and join them in fervent prayers for his eternal repose," Communication Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said.

Corona served as Associate Justice from April 9, 2002. He replaced former Chief Justice Renato Puno on May 12, 2010 until he was impeached in May 2012 for failure to truthfully declare his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth.

Before he was appointed Chief Justice, Corona became former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's presidential chief of staff.

Corona was reported to have diabetes and had undergone two bypass operations.

The court said public viewing of Corona's remains will start Saturday, April 30, at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.

Born on October 15, 1948, Corona attended the Ateneo de Manila University from grade school, high school, college, and law school. He completed his Masters of Law at the Harvard Law School in the United States in 1982 and was conferred a Doctor of Civil Law degree by the University of Santo Tomas. (With SDR)
