Santiago: Fighting corruption a top priority

IF Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago will be elected president on May 9, the feisty lawmaker said Friday that the first item under her administration is to "reform the culture of corruption".

"It does not take a genius to solve corruption. Laudable remedies have time and again been proposed. In fact, several measures aimed at curbing corruption are now pending in Congress. I have authored or supported these bills, and if elected, I vow to shepherd them into approval," Santiago said before 3,000 supporters at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod City.

"Our weapons against corruption are ready. What we need is the will to win," she added.

Among the corruption-curbing measures Santiago authored or supported in Congress were Freedom of Information bill, the Anti-Political Dynasty bill, the Anti-Epal Bill, and the Anti-Political Recommendations Bill.

Citing the latest Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International, Santiago noted that the Philippines ranked 95th out of the 168 countries.

If elected president, Santiago said she would make sure that the country will get rid of problems it is currently facing.

"My administration will bequeath to the next president a nation stronger than what I will inherit. By the end of my term, the Philippines will be more prosperous, its people more united, and its political institutions more stable," Santiago said. (Sunnex)
