La Union congressman escapes bomb blast; 2 bodyguards hurt

LA UNION Second District Representative Eufranio "Franny" Eriguel escaped death when a remote controlled bomb placed on a parked motorcycle exploded just as his car was passing by after coming from his home for a campaign sortie Saturday morning.

The explosion happened along Verceles Street in Agoo town, near the Eriguel's home.

Eriguel said that two of his bodyguards, who rode in the back-up car and just behind Eriguel’s car, suffered burns all over their bodies and were rushed to a local hospital in San Fernando City, La Union.

"I learned that they (bodyguards) are now in critical condition," he said.

"They detonated the bomb but I already got passed the explosion, it was split second," Eriguel said.

Eriguel is now on his third and final term as congressman as his wife, incumbent Agoo town Mayor Sandra Eriguel, who is also on her final term, is running for congresswoman against retired military General Tomas Dumpit Jr.

"You know them. But it's hard to point at anybody although there were always threats in the past, anyway, the campaign continues," he added.

Sandra is running under the ticket of ABONO Party-list Representative Pacoy Ortega, who is running for governor of La Union.

Superintendent Artemio Infante, Public Information Officer of the La Union Police, said that the La Union Police Provincial Office was still conducting a thorough probe of the incident. (PNA)
