Ecleo loses in Dinagat town again

"DRAGON slayer" in 2013 election strikes again in 2016.

Dinagat Island Representative Arlene "Kaka" Bag-ao was proclaimed Tuesday night for her second term after she defeated former Dinagat island governor Jade Ecleo by 3,136 votes in the lone district of Dinagat Island.

Bag-ao garnered 26,803 votes, while Ecleo got 24,667.

In the 2013 election, Bag-ao ran for the first time and defeated Jade's younger sister Gwendolyn Ecleo by 3,246 votes.

Dinagat had long been held by the Ecleos, occupying various public positions in the island. Ruben Ecleo is addressed as the Divine Master of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association Inc. (PBMA). He has accused of killing his wife and her family.

Bag-ao was born and raised in Loreto, one of the seven towns in Dinagat, a small island east of Mindanao. She is a lawyer by profession and a former Akbayan partylist representative.

In her first term as congresswoman, she improved the farm-to-market roads in Dinagat, school buildings, medical healthcare programs and academic scholarship programs for poor but deserving students.

She studied at the University of Minnesota, USA. (Daniel Guden)
