Proclamations for guv, vice-guv may be held Saturday

PROCLAMATIONS for the highest elective positions in Negros Occidental will most likely take place Saturday as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) have yet to iron out the technical procedures that stemmed from the failure of elections in one village in Hinigaran town.

Due to the misdelivery of official ballots to a clustered precinct in Barangay Palayog, no election was held in the area on May 9, which stalled the transmission of votes cast in Hinigaran.

A special election will be held tomorrow for the 685 voters in Barangay Palayog.

The winning candidates for mayor Nadie Arceo and vice mayor Teresita Gabrido were already proclaimed Wednesday night since the outcome of the special election will no longer affect their votes.

For his part, Provincial Elections Supervisor Ian Lee Ananoria said: “I’m negotiating that the transmission be done without lowering the threshold. The problem is I am doing the request as the chairman of the Provincial Board of Canvassers, and I am also the one who will approve it in the absence of the regional director of Negros Island Region. I am making sure that the proclamation will be legally sound and not half baked.”

He added that lowering the threshold for provincial results may have implications in the national level especially on the race for vice president, and party-list organizations.

Awaiting proclamation are unopposed Governor Alfredo Marañon, re-elected Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson as well as re-elected Representative Alejandro Mirasol, re-elected Board Member Alain Gatuslao and board member-elect Renato Malabor Jr., all of the Fifth District.

Second District’s Board Member Salvador Escalante and board member- elect Samson Mirhan chose to be proclaimed with Marañon. (TDE)
