"He said he would initiate peace talks with the armed groups in our country. These issues have long divided us as a nation, I think it is a very good move," Gaerlan said.

Way before the heated campaign, Vice chairman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Ghazali Jaafar endorsed Duterte.

"You are the only Mindanaoan in the track and we believe that a Mindanaoan truly understands our situation," Ghazali said in an earlier interview.

On May 7, Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founder Nur Misuari's video expressing his support for Duterte. "I want Duterte or Dureza. They are Mindanaoans, they know the problem and the biggest problem of this country is peace," Misuari said.

Gaerlan is confident there will be peace when various groups are open for negotiations. "The thrust of the armed groups, I believe is the same advocacy that we have. They are for peace and development," he said. "We need to upgrade our communication."
