AROUND P15 million worth of properties were burned into ashes, while four people were safely rescued in a more than four hour fire that broke out early Monday, May 16, in Zamboanga City.
The fire, which broke out around 4:55 a.m., Monday, razed a cinema and a department store located along Mayor Jaldon Street in the village of Zone III.
The cinema is located in a building adjacent to the ZCFD headquarters as well as the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) regional office.
Chief Inspector Clint Cha, Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD) marshal, said the fire started at Viva Cinerama and spread to the four-storey building occupied by the Unisales Metro Zamboanga that deals with textiles and other household products.
Cha said the fire started near the storeroom of the cinema’s orchestra section based on the testimonies of one of the four employees the firemen rescued.
Cha said the ZCFD first responders managed to rescue the four employees although the blaze was already uncontrollable considering the cinema was an old building.
The fire spread to the department store in the adjacent building as the firewall collapsed.
Cha said they encountered difficulty in putting off the fire as most of the department store’s stocks were textile products.
He said they have to use Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), a highly efficient type of fire suppressant agent, to be able to extinguish the fire.
He said investigation will continue in order to determine the cause of the fire. The ZCFD declared fire out at 9:20 a.m.
