Lightning kills 2, injures 5 in Cadiz

TWO farm workers were killed while five others were injured after they were hit by a lightning at Hacienda Porter, Barangay Andres Bonifacio in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental Thursday morning.

Police identified the fatalities as Juvie Jumawan, 27, and Willie Barredo, 38; and the injured as Mark Sopueska, 17, Cristobal Magbanua, 31, Johnrel Lobrico, 18, and his cousins Jeffrey, 23, and Silverio, 43, all of Hacienda Elvira in the said village.

Superintendent Edel Jose Manzano, city police chief, said the victims were working on the sugarcane field when a heavy rain fell then the lightning struck.

Both Jumawan and Barredo died on the spot while the others were rushed to a hospital.

Cadiz City Vice Mayor Samson Mirhan said the local government will extend financial assistance to the victims.

Mirhan reminded the public to be cautious in going out of the house when there is lightning. (with reports from EPN)
