Baguio futsal team gears up for Batang Pinoy Luzon qualifiers

DESPITE the major revamp in their line-up, Baguio City’s female junior futsal team are still looking for a good finish in the upcoming 2016 Batang Pinoy Luzon Leg in August.

The Summer Capital’s futbelle squad are setting their sights to land a decent podium spot when the annual Luzon qualifiers take action in Ilagan, Isabela, later this year.

Baguio futsal coach Aries Bocalan said the new roster are taking their time to secure a well-balanced performance knowing they are up against a stiffer challenge this time around.

“We know we have a lot to prove this time, it was a good finish for us last year but now that many of the former members of the team are already above the required age, we must understand that we also have to adjust and exert more effort going into the games,” Bocalan said.

During the 2015 Batang Pinoy Luzon held in Malolos, Bulacan, the Summer Capital surprised spectators after clinching the overall title in the girls’ futsal contest.

The team dominated other LGU’s to close the week-long contest unscathed with a perfect five straight win outing despite competing only for the second time.

“We are looking to defend the title we won last year, perhaps kung maganda ang kalalabasan ng training we can still bring the challenge to our competitors,” said Bocalan, adding at least six players in last year’s squad are already graduate this time.

During the national finals held in Cebu December of 2015, the team also managed to secure a decent bronze medal outing.

Meanwhile, city sports development officer Gaudencio Gonzales said they are looking forward to the preparations made of the futsal entries.

“If they can continue their romp sa Batang Pinoy it will surely be a win for the city, we just have to provide them with the support they need and if chances permit maybe we can still bring home the bacon from that particular event,” Gonzales said.

Last year, Baguio retained is second overall finish in the Luzon qualifiers with 42 gold, 40 silver, and 46 bronze medals, behind two-time defending champion Quezon City with a 47-29-29.
