Lakas, NUP form alliance to support Duterte

THE Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and the National Unity Party (NUP) formally formed an alliance on Monday to support the legislative agenda of incoming President Rodrigo Duterte.

Outgoing Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Lakas-CMD president, said the leaders of two political parties identified with former President and re-elected Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo have decided to set aside their differences and formally forge coalition in support with the incoming Duterte Administration.

"We feel that we started off in the right foot and this will add to the unity that has been needed to push for, the legislative agenda the President (Duterte)," said Romualdez.

The NUP was formed in 2011 by former members of Lakas-Kampi-CMD who broke away after internal discontent within the party.

"We used to have very close ties. In fact, we are very close until 2010. We are re-uniting in pursuing the agenda of President Duterte,” said Romualdez.

The two parties also vowed to back the speakership bid of incoming Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez in the 17th Congress.

Romualdez said the latest partnership deal with NUP is focused on helping Alvarez to push the legislative agenda of Duterte.

"This is to strengthen the support of legislative agenda of incoming President Rody Duterte under the leadership of Bebot Alvarez as Speaker," said Romualdez.

The Lakas-CMD last week forged a separate alliance with PDP-Laban.

Meanwhile, NUP secretary general Reginald Velasco said that they are expecting their party to grow more this coming new Congress especially after the coalition with Lakas.

He said NUP currently has 40 elected lawmakers for the 17th Congress and he is expecting additional new members to join before July 25. (Sunnex)
