No quorum for SSS pension hike override

BAYAN Muna party-list Representative Neri Colmenares said they failed to reach a quorum in Monday's resumption of plenary session to override President Benigno Aquino III's veto on the P2,000 monthly pension increase for Social Security System (SSS) pensioners.

Colmenares said in phone interview that only 187 congressmen were present and they needed five more to reach 192, which is two-thirds of the total number of congressmen required to file a motion for the override.

"Unfortunately, we failed to get the required number," the Negrense lawmaker said.

He added that he delivered a privilege speech and appealed to his colleagues in the 16th Congress to attend the remaining sessions.

"We have until June 10 and if we can attain the quorum, I will immediately file the motion," Colmenares said.

He added that he is hopeful that if the outgoing Congress cannot override the veto, the incoming Congress would be able to act on it especially that presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte is supportive of the move to increase the monthly SSS pension.

Colmenares ran for senator, but lost in the May 9 elections.
