A MOTORCYCLE rider, 44, died after a concrete mixer truck ran over him on United Nations Ave. in Mandaue City yesterday morning.

The accident caused heavy traffic on the roads connecting to UN Ave., which leads to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, for about two hours.

Attending doctors declared Alvin Castañares dead on arrival in the Mandaue City Hospital. He was said to be a resident of Lapu-Lapu City.

PO1 Eutiqio Soringa Jr., an investigator of the Mandaue City Police Office-Traffic Management Unit, said the motorcycle and the truck were both coming from Lapu-Lapu and headed for Mandaue when the accident happened past 9:30 a.m.

Ang driver sa mixer mao nala’y nabantayan niya naa’y miuntol sa atras nga ligid (The truck driver heard something hit one of the rear tires),” Soringa said.

It was not clear how Castañares, who was riding his Honda Wave motorcycle (GA 65181), got in the truck’s way.

Through his driver’s license, the driver of the mixer truck was identified as Joesel Arangco, 32, of Borbon, Cebu. The authorities impounded the truck (ABG 2838) in the Mandaue City Sports Complex compound.

Arangco was in the truck by himself and told investigators he was driving at a low speed when the accident happened.

After the accident, traffic built up from the corner of UN Ave. and D.M. Cortes St. (formerly Plaridel St.) all the way to the Cansaga Bridge.

Louie Alivio, a radio operator of the City Command Center, said the mixer truck was removed from the scene at 9:45 a. m. but that traffic congestion continued up to 11:20 a.m.

Arangco was detained at Mandaue Police Station 5 and will be charged, according to Soringa, with reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property and homicide.
