MOMMIES know best. It’s hard to argue this fact especially when Mother’s Day is just a day away (wink, wink). But kidding aside, some food businesses in the metro—that have mothers at the helm of things—just have that vibe that rings volumes of tender loving care.
Is it in a mother’s nature to always serve the best? Is there something about moms that allow them to tap into their keen sense for nurturing, eventually transforming them into modern savvy entrepreneurs? Today, Sun.Star Cebu Cebu Live! checks out a few stories from mothers around town, of how they have embraced not only their respective families, but their budding businesses as well.
Whole Food Cebu is an online lunch delivery service owned and managed by mom and food entrepreneur, Janeen Almendras-Quisumbing together with her business partner Lorrie Su. Opened earlier this year, the new food venture adds to Janeen’s food biz roster, which also includes Sweet Surprises, the online cakes and pastries shop she’s been operating since 2013 with her mother-in-law Lita.
The refreshingly healthy and the sinfully sweet—contrasting in nature, yet both are personally attended to and prepared by Janeen. “It’s just really my passion.
[Preparing food] excites me, and when people enjoy it—that’s enough to make me happy,” she said. While Sweet Surprises is known for its cupcakes and pastries, Whole Food Cebu offers savory lunch meals made using fresh, unprocessed and unrefined ingredients. Some of the latter’s specialties are the fresh mushroom stroganoff, the Thai chicken and mango salad and the veggie burger.
With Whole Food Cebu, Janeen prepares it daily with Lorrie every morning—leaving her the entire afternoon to bond with her two-year-old, Janna. “The rest of the day is for her,” she said. “Balance is important. Do what you love, but don’t forget to have time for the family as well.”
