Wrong corpse given to family

A FAMILY in Negros Oriental sought the help of Cebu media after their 76-year-old patriarch died in the National Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City last May 11, but the cadaver that was delivered to their residence was that of a young man believed to be in his 30s.

Ahrlene Maceda of Sitio Silab, Amlan, Negros Oriental said they already shipped back the cadaver of the young man, but her family is still trying to find the remains of her father, Angel Sanico Maceda.

Former Compostela mayor Gilbert Wagas told Sun.Star Cebu that based on the information he got, Maceda’s remains was brought to the Eastern Funeral Homes in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Maceda’s wife Baltazara sought the help of Amlan Mayor Bentham P. dela Cruz and Rep. George Arnaiz but until now they cannot find the remains of her husband.

Baltazara and dela Cruz already sent a complaint for gross negligence to NBP Director Richard Schwarzkopf Jr. against those who may be held liable for the mistake.

Rep. Arnaiz’s request to release the cadaver has also not been acted upon.

The Amlan Police Station conducted an inquiry and confirmed that the remains shipped to the Maceda residence was not that of Angel.

Baltazara said that because of the mistake her family became the subject of ridicule in the neighborhood, while they continue to grief for the loss of her husband.

Baltazara asked Schwarzkopf to find her husband’s remains and send it to Amlan with the NBP spending for the shipment.
