NBI probes death of journalist

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Tuesday it was investigating the shooting death of a police beat reporter in Manila last Friday, May 27.

NBI-Death Investigation Division chief Daniel Lalucis said they are conducting a parallel investigation into the death of Alex Balcoba, a columnist of People's Brigada tabloid, who was shot dead by an unidentified gunman.

Lalucis said that the agency is also investigating if the murder was work-related.

Balcoba was shot in the head by a lone gunman in front of a watch repair shop owned by his family in Quiapo, Manila. The victim was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.

Lalucis said they will check if there are CCTV cameras installed near the crime scene and if there are witnesses.

Earlier, the Manila Police District has created a task force to investigate the journalist's murder.

Balcoba is the second journalist to be murdered in the Philippines and 34th since 2010, since President Benigno Aquino came to power. (Sunnex)
