A 21-YEAR-OLD man was arrested for allegedly using a 10-year-old son of a radio actor-director to steal P60,000 from the latter’s grandmother’s cabinet in Barangay Basak Pardo, Cebu City.

Silvio (real name withheld), father of the boy, arrested the suspect, Kent Niño Mangoda, last Monday night and turned him over to the Police Station 7.

Silvio is also connected with the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Investigation showed Mangoda approached Silvio’s son Paco (real name withheld) and convinced him to steal the money last

Sunday afternoon.

Paco, afraid of the suspect, returned to his house and found the money inside the bag that was placed on top of his grandmother’s cabinet.

Charges

He later turned over the cash to Mangoda, who promised to take him to a shopping spree.

Last Monday, around 10 a.m., Mangoda brought Paco and the latter’s friend to a mall, where he bought the boy items worth around P13,300.

Mangoda later brought them home and left.

Paco, however, later confessed to his father that he stole the money at the urging of the suspect.

Silvio found the suspect and recovered P50,694.

PO3 Fatima Nuñeza of Police Station 7-Women and Children’s Protection Desk said the suspect is a resident of Barangay Quiot Pardo, but transferred to Basak Pardo two days ago.

“Nagkaila daw sila sa bata (He befriended the boy),” she said in a phone interview.

A complaint for violating Republic Act 7610, or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, will be filed against the suspect.

Section 10(a) of the law punishes any person who “shall commit any other acts of child abuse, cruelty or exploitation or to be responsible for other conditions prejudicial to the child’s development.”
