P800,000 in drugs seized in 3 NIR operations

AFTER an early Monday morning operation in Siaton, Negros Oriental that yielded P2.9 million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu), police operatives seized almost P800,000 worth of illegal drugs more in three subsequent operations in Negros Island Region (NIR) on the same day.

At around 9:15 a.m., operatives recovered P24,000 worth of shabu during a pot session at the house of Lope “Miko” Sorbeto at corner Arcenal-Isagani Roads in Barangay 3, in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.

Arrested along with Sorbeto were his relatives Guadalupe, Carl and James Carl Sorbeto.

The operation led the police to the whereabouts of the city’s number one drug personality identified as Jude Thaddeus Varquez.

Two hours later, operatives raided Varquez’s farm house at Barangay Obogon in the said city, through a search warrant issued by Tanjay Regional Trial Court Branch 43 Judge Winston Villegas.

They seized 11 sachets of suspected shabu weighing 60 grams with an estimated value of P600,000 along with drug paraphernalia.

Varquez evaded arrest while his right hand Rey Ocarol and father Arcenio Varquez were apprehended.

Police recovered from Ocarol’s possession a loaded rifle while the elder Varquez yielded a sachet of suspected shabu weighing 0.8 grams with an estimated value of P8,000.

Senior Inspector Ryan Jay Orapa, chief of Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group (PAIDSOTG), said Varquez is a suspected drug lord, and has supplier contacts in various locations, including those in New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, and in Cebu.

The two operations were conducted by joint personnel of Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office-Special Operations Task Group and PAIDSOTG in coordination with the Provincial Public Safety Company, Special Weapons and Tactics team, and Tanjay City Police Station.

The suspects face charges for violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Law.

Meanwhile, in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, operatives seized about 16.3 grams of shabu with an estimated market value of P163,000 in a raid at Felizardo Recla’s residence in Phase 4, Barangay Rizal at around 10:20 p.m.

Chief Inspector Mark Anthony Darroca, chief of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office-Anti- illegal Drug Special Operation Task Group (Nocppo-AIDSOTG), said Recla was arrested after he sold suspected shabu to a poseur-buyer for P200.

Also arrested were Ariel Saldua and Regin Broce.

Drug paraphernalia, and a homemade .38 caliber firearm were also seized from Recla’s place by Darroca’s team along with operatives from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and San Carlos City Police Station.

While the police were conducting an inventory of confiscated items, Darroca said Recla’s live-in partner, Roseville Tuhao, also a subject of the operation, texted Felizardo.

Tuhao asked for more drug supply which prompted operatives to proceed to a suspected drug den in Ylagan Extension, Barangay 6.

At around 10:50 p.m., the joint team conducted a drug bust against Tuhao, and confiscated three elongated sachets of suspected shabu.

All four suspects are detained at San Carlos City Police Station.

In Toboso, Negros Occidental, Jose Sabanal, 55, of Calatrava town was arrested in a combat patrol operation at Sitio Salvacion, Barangay Magticol after he yielded a loaded homemade shotgun.

Meanwhile, Jerry Calibjo, 49, of Purok Ipili-Ipil in Barangay Mabini, Valladolid town was arrested after police raided his house with a search warrant issued by Bago City RTC Branch 62 Judge Frances Guanzon.
