THE Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail (MOPJ) conducted a surprise inspection inside the female cells, Tuesday morning, June 7.
The surprise search is supervised by Jail Warden Dominador Tagarda and jail overseer Rhoel Leon Factura.
The inspection was done to seize prohibited materials inside the jail facility and maintain the peace and order inside MOPJ and ensure no contraband gets inside the facility.
Provincial Information Officer Allyn Peñalosa said the regular search is conducted almost monthly while the surprise search is not announced, for obvious reasons.
The seized contraband recovered 18 cellphones, 16 cellphone chargers, 15 cellphone batteries, seven pieces of spoon, three headsets, seven sets of playing cards, nine sim cards, six pairs of scissors, three matches, two memory cards, five cutters and drug paraphernalia.
The said contraband were immediately destroyed and burned by MOPJ personnel after documentation and inventory.
Tagarda said the inspection is part of the directive and campaign of Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano against illegal drugs and prohibited activities inside the jail facility.
Tagarda said the activity also aims to discipline erring inmates both male and female.
MOPJ is investigating and looking at how the contraband got through the jail facility.
It also vowed to strengthen and intensify further their search and inspection of visitors at the entrance of the facility.
Emano earlier told reporters that the Provincial Government is mulling the transfer of the jail facility in Initao town due to congestion.
The 200-capacity provincial jail is already overly crowded with more than 500 inmates at present.
The transfer of MOPJ to Initao will pave the way to the accommodation of more detainees as well as house high profile prisoners.
Emano said the transfer will push through once funds are available.
