Woman faces online libel plaint

ONLINE libel charges were filed against a woman from Cebu City for allegedly maligning the reputation of her neighbor last year through her comments she posted on her Facebook account.

Prosecutor Simaco Labata found evidence to charge Jebbie Joy Gitgano with online libel before the Regional Trial Court.

Bail has been set at P10,000.

The case stemmed from the complaint that Michael Allera filed against Gitgano before the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor.

In August 2015, Allera said the cousin of his live-in partner informed him that someone posted derogatory remarks against him on Facebook.

Allera said they found out it was Gitgano, a resident of Tres de Abril, Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.

Allera said it was unfair of Gitgano to malign him on Facebook, considering he has no derogatory record in court.

Gitgano failed to submit her counter-affidavit, prompting the prosecutor to resolve the complaint based on the evidence presented by the complainant.

“The defamatory words solicited so many comments, which put the complainant in the bad light, caused so much humiliation and destroyed his name and that of his family as a whole,” said Labata in his resolution.
