New hotel to support local tourism in Tagbilaran City

MOTORCYCLE and appliance distributor Du Ek Sam has ventured into the hospitality industry by opening the Kew Hotel in Tagbilaran City.

Du Ek Sam president and CEO Dr. Wilson Du led the opening last June 3.

The business hotel is across the Tagbilaran City Hall at the corner of JA Clarin and Calceta Sts.

According to Bohol Gov. Edgar Chatto, the seven-storey hotel is the newest addition to over 6,000 rooms in the province and a major contribution to the tourism industry as well.

“It is a timely investment as Philippine Airlines plans to open direct flights to Korea soon,” said Chatto.

Chatto recently met with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) about the new P7-billion Bohol airport in Panglao that can cater to 1.7 million tourists a year.

“It will be a much bigger airport with international standards,” Chatto added.

Chatto revealed they have assessed the technical viability of direct flights from Korea to Tagbilaran and have found it very feasible. However, an ocular inspection is yet to be done as the small terminal in the city might not be able to meet all the requirements of the CIQ. They plan on using the emergency apron across the runway as a second terminal for international arrivals so as to decongest the Tagbilaran airport.

The Tagbilaran airport will close once the Panglao airport becomes operational in the first quarter of 2018. It will be transformed into another development, which will become an economic and business area. The Panglao airport, on the other hand, will have concessionaires and will be much closer to tourist destinations. The new airport is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Asked what keeps tourists coming to Bohol, the governor said the province has everything--coastal areas, white sand beaches, dive sites, cliffs, coastlines, one of only six double barrier reefs in the world, the biggest mangrove plantation in Asia, 75 islets, sandbars, various species, flora and fauna and heritage sites. Chatto said that the tourism figures are now recovering, after suffering from magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit the province in 2013. CCP
