Davao Optima, PNP bag volley titles

HIGHLY-touted teams Davao Optima and Philippine National Police (PNP)-Lady Patrollers clinched titles at the close of the 2016 Davao City Summer Fest Invitational Open Beach Volleyball held Sunday at the Felis Beach Resort Complex in Matina Aplaya.

The Calvin Sarte and Brendon John Wariza-bannered Davao Optima defeated Saori's Edmar Flores and Loujei Tigpos 25-23, 21-19, 15-11 during the best-of-three me's championship match.

In the distaff side, PNP's tandem of Lourdilyn Catubag and Karen Kaye Quilario defended their title after beating Philhealth veteran duo Leizl Manatad and May Shiela Agton in the best of two sets championship round in womens division, 21-17, 21-15.

Sarte, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said, "Confident kami na manalo, since kasamako dati si Flores, alam ko na ang mga moves na gagawin niya, pero I still give everything to God."

Catubag, in a separate interview, said, "we didn't expect anything in the beginning, we just played the game."

Quilario, for her part, said, "Thankful kami na nag champion kami ulit, di din kasi namin inexpect, kaya masaya kami ngayon."

The champion teams received P30,000 and a certificate while the runners-up claimed P20,000. The next two placers took home P15,000 and P10,000.

All eliminated teams received a consolation prize of P20,000 in the event sponsored by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office, Davao Volleyball Association and Philippine Volleyball Federation.
