Slay suspect killed in shootout

ONE of the suspects in the murder of an evangelist was killed in an alleged shootout with the police on Guadario St., Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City last Tuesday night.

Oliver “Kabang” Devilleres, 41, died from three gunshot wounds, one in the head and two in the abdomen, in a shootout with the elements of the Guadalupe Police Station. He died on his birthday.

Devilleres was one of the seven people suspected of killing Pastor Crisostomo Maternal Jr., an evangelist in the Baptist Bonbon Mission Church and an anti-illegal drug crusader in the mountain barangay of Bonbon, last June 6.

Chief Insp. Jose Gesto, Guadalupe Police Station chief, said Devilleres served a jail term at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa for a drug-related offense. He was also “a self-confessed” gun-for-hire involved in shooting incidents in 2007 and 2009.

Gesto said that a concerned citizen called up the police station to report about an armed person, who was wearing a black jacket and denim pants past 10 p.m. Gesto said he sent five of his men to the area.

Devilleres allegedly tried to shoot at the police team but the gun misfired, giving the police the opportunity to shoot back. An MK-4 Colt .45, a caliber .45 pistol and four bullets were allegedly recovered from the suspect’s possesion.

Incoming Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said he will give a P50,000 reward to the Guadalupe Police Station for killing Devilleres.

Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Patrocinio Comendador Jr., congratulated the Cebu City Police Office for its swift action against those involved in the killing of Maternal.

He said that the PRO 7 will coordinate with the New Bilibid Prison because the police received information that a certain Ramil Bonghanoy, an inmate in the facility, was allegedly the one who gave the approval to kill Maternal.
