First day of school for the very young ones

SUMMER is gone and the rains have come. Children at all levels are trooping to the classrooms.

News in the airwaves and papers are all about the K to 12, but for some parents and lolas, the preoccupation is more on the first timers who will be having their baptism into the world of education. Count me among that roster of grandmas who were equally excited, like the parents, to see our little one make it to school.

With the full implementation of K to 12, adjustments were likewise made in the nursery level, which now has to be three years old by the opening of classes. The age goes up as the level increases.

Let us visit some of the nursery schools around town.

Over at the Ayala Complex in the City of Talisay, we have St. John’s Institute Ayala. Experiencing a rebirth, SJI Ayala is a science-oriented pre-school with students experiencing the “science of wonder, discovery and questions.”

It offers a holistic and progressive approach to mold future innovators who are equipped with empathy and drive for excellence. The aim is to provide a balance of quality, education, discipline with affection and deep understanding of faith. It also encourages creative thinking, appreciation of diversity in cultures and differences.

On its initial year, and is still welcoming late registrants, there is the pre-nursery for two-year old tots; nursery for the three year olds; pre-kindergarten for the four year olds and kindergarten for five year olds.

SJI Ayala is looking to add Grades 1 to 3 by the next school year and Grades 4 to 6 by 2018.

Over at 10th Lacson Street in Bacolod City, there is Bright Kids Preschool, which started out in 2007 as a quaint little educational toy store named Smart Toys for Smart Kids at Plaza Mart. It focused on supplying educational materials and resources and sponsoring educational seminars to various preschools in the city.

The owner, Teacher Sheryll, who has been a preschool head-teacher and consultant for preschools in Manila had requests for tutorials and enrichment classes. From three students, it grew to 30 kids. So in 2009, the center was moved to its current location.

Bright Kids was born out of a vision to provide head start learning programs to the Filipino-Chinese community of Bacolod. Its aim is to raise happy and well-rounded achievers! The school’s tagline is “start them right, make them bright!”

Kinder House Learning Center and Preschool Inc. is a progressive school that focuses on child-centered learning. Through play, the children are able to learn and express themselves naturally, making them discover and achieve their potentials. Kinder House offers different levels according to age.

Kinder House allows each child to achieve their full potential by building and strengthening their self-esteem. Their approach is to encourage each child to engage in activities they excel in as individuals and allow them to explore their own creativity and curiosity.

The School for Creative Beginners marked 23 years in quality early childhood education as they welcomed their preschoolers with aged one to five years old last June 8. SCB continues to uphold their vision of providing optimum development of children under their care.

Using the Multiple Intelligences Approach to learning, each child is greatly encouraged and appreciated to be the best that he can be, thus, coming out to be more confident, resilient and disciplined learners. SCB provides a happy and safe environment where the child can enjoy the process of learning.

I am truly amazed with the teachers in these nursery schools. For the newbies, there is a lot of crying and looking for their papa, mama or yaya. How they handle these kids to make them at home and comfortable is truly an art in itself!

As John Steinbeck said about teachers, “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”
